There have been a few controversies recently surrounding Facebook and its privacy and confidentiality settings etc. You must even have seen excerpts where Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, gives answers to prominent U.S. senators etc. Seeing this, you may have started to wonder whether staying on Facebook is a good idea or not.
Well, actually, the problem is not about staying on Facebook or not, it is about the way people themselves use Facebook.
Facebook was basically created in order to allow people to get in touch or stay in touch with people they knew. It has allowed many people around the world to get back in touch with old childhood friends, it has helped people to find jobs, it has helped people to find life-partners, it has definitely allowed businesses to expand, etc. So, as such, we should not start to look down on Facebook just because of a few problems that are totally solvable.
The main issue that has caused Facebook to be in the news in a negative manner recently is the lack of data security. In fact, you could, by using applications, risk to get your personal data sold to corporations, etc. Well, there are two solutions to this problem.
First, Facebook should make it safer for the users and businesses. And, looking at what has been discussed in the U.S. Senate, and looking at the commitments that Mark Zuckerberg made, we should feel reassured in this regard. He clearly admitted that what had happened, was not intentional at all, and that all such problems shall be studied further by his team in order to avoid such problems in the future. At the European Union level, as well, steps have been taken in order for Facebook’s security to get a little tighter. So, as long as steps are being made in the right direction like considering other networks like twitter and get twitter followers, businesses should not take extreme steps and quit it, because they might regret it later and want to come back on Facebook. It’s the world’s number one social media network after all…
The second main thing for users to bear in mind is that it is not just a Facebook thing. The whole Internet can be risky in terms of data security. Facebook is not the only risky place on the internet. And this brings us to the second solution to Facebook’s security problems: users have to change themselves as well, and even businesses. Users tend to trust applications and websites too easily. Users also tend to share whatever happens in their life on the internet. Well, let us re-think the way we use the internet, generally speaking. We could not blame Facebook, for example, if we shared with our friends some sort of personal information that could later on be misused by our own friends. Right? The same goes for businesses, who should be careful and less naïve. When a plant has an unhealthy leaf of it, you don’t just stop to water the plant, right?
Facebook can be an incredibly amazing tool today. It is the best way to get and stay in touch, even when we are miles away from one another. It is a great social media marketing platform. It has plenty of advantages, so it would clearly be sad to leave it just because it is currently facing some issues that are most probably going to be resolved in the future. Businesses, especially, have a lot more to gain from Facebook than they have to lose.
